On beginning at Volume I

Every publishing house begins with an impossible ambition.

To create something that deserves to exist in a world already crowded with books, articles, opinions and noise.

The temptation is to announce yourself loudly. To publish many things quickly. To prove momentum through volume.

We have chosen the opposite.

Oracle begins with a single volume.

Not because there was only one idea, but because the first publication establishes every standard that follows. It determines how carefully we research, how rigorously we edit, how deliberately we design, and whether the reader feels respected from the first page to the last.

Scale has never impressed us.

Care has.

If the first title earns a permanent place on someone's desk, shelf or screen, then the publishing house has already succeeded in its first responsibility.

Everything else grows from there.

Volume I is not simply where we started.

It is the standard every future volume must justify.
